Here's How Many ULEZ Motorcycle Scrappage Applications TFL Has Received

A scrappage scheme aimed at taking non-ULEZ-compliant vehicles off the road has now closed. Motorists who did not apply before the closing date could find themselves paying a daily charge of £12.50 to drive around London if their car/bike does not meet the emissions standards. This comes after Transport for London (TFL) announced that £186m had been paid out to almost 54,000 successful applicants to get rid of older and more polluting vehicles.

The vehicle types included that don’t meet the emissions regulations are motorcycles that do not meet Euro 3 standards (in other words pre-2007 models), petrol cars and vans that don’t meet Euro 4 standards (pre-2006 vehicles), Diesel cars and vans that do not meet Euro 6 standards (pre-2015 vehicles) and Buses, coaches and lorries will need to meet or exceed the Euro VI standard, or pay £100 a day to drive within the zone.

Changes to the scrappage scheme, which came into force in August last year, enabled all Londoners or people driving through London to replace non-compliant cars/motorcycles to claim up to £2,000. The price increased to £7,000 for van or minibus road users.

A statement on 4 August from TfL through its data showed it had approved more than 36,000 of the 74,993 applications for cars and motorcycles and 17,936 of the 61,208 applications for vans and minibuses. According to a fact sheet Visordown was sent from TFL, 577 of the 74,993 scrappage applications are motorcycles, with a total of 199 approved since August. 

The process has been anything but easy, according to the BBC’s London transport correspondent, Tom Edwards, who said: "It did not go totally smoothly, with processing delays and errors initially".

"However it has succeeded in getting over £180m into the pockets of Londoners for scrapping thousands of more polluting vehicles."

Last month the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan added: "I am proud that the scrappage scheme - the biggest in the UK - has supported so many Londoners to switch to cleaner, greener vehicles."
